"Boldexplorer" is a steel 44' sailing cutter

Built to Codes of Practice for the Safety of Small Commercial Sailing Vessels.
Category "0". Unrestricted World Wide operation.


This is a requirement of the British Department of Transport, governing Commercial Vessels. It covers stability, construction, machinery, operation and manning; and it's suitability for World Wide operation. The vessel has been constructed under the careful scrutiny of YBDSA surveyors to ensure its proper construction and compliance with Category "O", as a Sail Training Vessel.

She was designed by Bruce Roberts-Goodson.

  • Deck saloon arrangement (allowing a view of the horizon when seated below) with "bullet proof" polycarbonate windows.
  • Large navigation desk.
  • Water tight bulkhead between forecabin/saloon and with thicker steel sections forr'd at the waterline.
  • 10 berths with some deep 'trough' sea berths amidships.
  • Shower and two heads, central heating, 'fridge and plenty of personal storage.
Powerful yet simple rig


Masthead cutter rigged, with double spreaders: (Straight)
  • Inner forestay : - To carry a staysail or a storm staysail.
  • Twin forestays : - To carry No. 1,2,3, Genoas and Jibs.
Main mast :
  • To carry a fully battened main on a "sailman" track and batten cars.
  • A separate track for the storm trysail', and a spinnaker.
Furling sails are a great convenience, but not in mid-ocean with a rising wind and the prospect of a full gale. For simplicity and reliability we have chosen to use 'hanked on sails' on three separate stays. Several sails can remain bent on, providing a quick sail change when required.

The forecabin becomes a designated sail locker at sea, with the forehatch allowing easy access during sail changes. Finally a watertight bulkhead keeps the damp where it belongs!
